It's been a while since I reviewed a South African red. I don't think I ever have reviewed a red wine blend containing the Viognier white grape, but frankly, at 2% its impact must be fairly small. The Boekenhoutskloof farm was founded in 1776 in the Valley of Franschhoek foothills about 50 miles (75 kilometers) from Cape Town. In 1993 the farm and homestead were restored and the new owners planted grapes. They now do Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. While this area, settled by French Huguenot refugees, was known for its elephants and leopards, its famous wolf trap has never held a wolf. This blend is 68% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre, and 2% Viognier. The companion wine is a Spanish Garnacha costing over 50% more.
Snack. One thing I have learned while living in Thailand is that Thai girls snack. They literally have food on their desk at work and nibble at it all day. What this does is, because you're eating small quantities of food all day long, your metabolism doesn't have time to stop working. It doesn't feel like it might be on a hunger strike, so it speeds up to burn the calories. I snack on fruit, peanuts, whole wheat crackers, pork balls (a Thai street food snack), sticky rice with mango, and sometimes dried spicy slow cooker beef and beetroot curry. I just eat a little bit, but eat every 15 minutes or so. My metabolism doesn't have time to slow down so I burn much more calories than when I was eating three meals a day with no snacks in between.
In fact, I had an interesting short conversation with one of the managers at the store at Speedway and Swan. The cashier had asked me, as is their wont, whether I found everything I was looking for. I told him that I had not found Whole Soy yogurt, which is my favorite. The manager told me that--good news--Whole Soy has just received their Organic certification. So it will be a couple of weeks before their brand begins spicy beef curry trickling back into the stores. They are undoubtedly waiting for packaging that will display their new organic status.
When I first tasted this wine without any food, I found it powerful and multi-layered with good length. My initial meal consisted of slow cooker beef curry curry ribs with potatoes. I tasted earth and mushrooms in the wine. A little wine went a long way. There was some chocolate, dark cherries and tobacco. This Pinot Noir was really present. I added a fair amount of Louisiana red pepper sauce and the chocolate taste was intensified. The side dish was an unspicy Turkish salad based on sweet pimentos, tomato paste, and hot peppers. The wine was still present and quite long.

Add the coconut milk at the end and bring it to the boil. To thicken the curry please add corn flour in a small bowl and add half a cup of water. Mix this and then pour it into the pot and stir unto the curry thickens. Garnish with some fresh cream and coriander.
